What does a RED One DMT (Data Management Tech) do?

Pre-production

  • work with production and Digital Imaging Tech (DIT) to determine and document on-set data management and security procedures

DMT Workstation Prep

  • ensure all items ordered are indeed supplied
  • set up and thoroughly check all equipment
  • set up and test the DMT station and all media, cabling

Production

  • work with DIT to assure proper procedures and technology for absolute protection of camera data
  • duplicate and process data as needed
  • ship data to other locations as needed
  • coordinate processing and use of data with post-production personnel
  • document all data management in appropriate logs

Post-production

  • assure all media and data have been delivered and checked by all intended recipients
  • assure all documentation is accurate and delivered to all recipients


What does a RED One DIT (Digital Imaging Tech) do?

Pre-production

  • work with all production personnel to design a production workflow and build an appropriate camera package and data station
  • prepare camera package for all rigging scenarios - steadi-cam, crane, helicopter, etc.
  • help production determine what creative and technical tasks to perform on set versus in post
  • assure all procedures and the digital pipeline will function effectively and economically
  • work with Data Management Tech to determine on-set data management and security procedures

Camera Prep - support camera team

  • ensure all items ordered are indeed supplied
  • set up and thoroughly check all equipment
  • set up and test the DIT station and all cabling
  • run standard tests on all lenses, checking back focus, witness marks, and all other lens parameters. Note the unique performance characteristics of individual lenses for future reference during shooting
  • check the settings of all menus in the camera and related gear
  • help test and establish best camera settings, lenses, and accessories
  • help production build all camera "looks" for the production and prepare in camera for easy recall
  • help the D.P./gaffer rate the camera's ASA and latitude
  • help supervise the check out and loading of all equipment from the rental house
  • support Data Management Tech with data management and security

Production

  • help check for critical focus on the HD picture monitor in the engineering station
  • maintain calibration of all set monitors as ambient lighting changes
  • when provided, set up video village tent or monitor hoods
  • help camera team assure proper exposure, watching picture and scopes for excessive clipping or crushed shadows
  • help camera team arrive at effective colorimetry both for recorded picture and on-set monitors
  • assure camera settings haven't accidentally been changed
  • if using standard-definition video playback systems, support the video assistant with continuous 'live' downconverted feeds
  • help optimize blue-/green-screen shots
  • trouble shoot, and maintain the camera system throughout the shoot. Avoid possible downtime, due to malfunction, technical difficulties (or technical confusion).

Post Production

  • support personnel and facilities with any challenges that arise
