straight talk:
The Chinese lantern creates a soft, diffuse light thrown in all
directions. It is particularly useful for representing an out-of-frame
ceiling light. A bit of black, flame retardant, cloth draped around the
lantern (but never over the vent opening!) can help control spill.
Chinese lanterns can burn! Be very careful to
position the globe at the center and assure it doesn't touch the sides. When
not needed for extended periods, "save the light" by turning it off.
The plastic light socket can melt with a 500w globe.
Again, "save the light" when not in use.
The long, thin filaments of the globes can easily
break. Protect them from shock and vibration.
To make the best use of the Chinese Lantern (and any high-wattage fixture) with
household power, you should have some
knowledge of basic electrical calculations and on-set technique.
